Express Entry is a new electronic application management system, an online system to manage the intake of immigration applications. It is a relatively new system launched in January 2015 by the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). Its goal is to make the system faster, more efficient and better respond to Canada’s labour market.
It is the hope of Citizenship and Immigration Canada that this new methodology will prevent backlogs and ensure quick processing times.
Regardless of the new method of applying for the economic classes, the qualifications of each of them remain fundamentally the same.
Express Entry manages applications in the existing economic immigration programs such as:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP),
- Federal Skilled Trades Program, and (FSTP),
- Canadian Experience Class. (CEC)
Applicants who meet the criteria for the above programs will be placed into a pool of candidates. Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) will select candidates that are most likely to succeed in Canada, rather than the one who is first in line. For example, candidates with the highest scores in the pool will be issued an Invitation to Apply (ITA). Provinces and territories can also recruit candidates from the Express Entry system through their Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP) to meet local labour market needs.
Express Entry system has two steps:
(Step 1) Potential candidates is required to complete an online Express Entry profile registration
If you are interested and qualified for the above programs, you will need to complete an online Express Entry profile. This is a secure form and will be used for you to provide your information such as:
- Work Experience,
- Language Ability,
- Education, and
- Other Details.
Candidates who meet the criteria of one of the federal immigration programs listed above will be accepted into a pool of candidates. However, entering into the pool does not guarantee that you will be issued an (Invitation to Apply) ITA for permanent residence. Yet, invited candidates will still have to meet eligibility and admissibility requirements.
(Step 2) The highest-ranking candidates in the pool will be invited to apply for permanent residence
Points will be given according to your profile based on a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The higher the score you have the more likelihood that you will be issued an Invitation to Apply (ITA). If you are invited to apply, you will have 60 days to submit an online application for permanent residence.
Citizenship and Immigration Canada is projecting a processing time of six months or less to complete an application.
Candidates can stay in the pool for up to 12 months. If you do not get an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence within 12 months of submitting an Express Entry profile, you may submit a new profile.
